The 0.5% That Matters Most

The Cape Floristic Region isn't just a collection of "pretty plants” – it is a biological powerhouse that defies every rule of nature.

To ignore the region is to ignore a global asset;
if this tiny, hyper-diverse engine fails, we don’t just lose a landscape – we lose one of the world's most successful evolutionary experiments.
Despite occupying a footprint of less than 0,5% of Africa, the Cape Floristic Region anchors nearly 20% of the continent’s flora, cramming more biodiversity into its mountain folds than most entire countries can claim. This is a high-stakes ecosystem that functions as the ultimate life-support system for the region, filtering the water millions of people drink and providing a genetic library found nowhere else on Earth.

The choice is simple: we clear the invaders now, or we watch a global treasure turn into a thirsty, flammable wasteland.

Invasive alien plants are the biggest threat, biological hijackers systematically dismantling the Cape Floristic Region. These aggressive outsiders, from Australian Acacias to European Pines, are thirstier and more ruthless than the native fynbos they replace, sucking billions of litres of water out of our catchments while millions of people face drought.

They turn natural wildfires into uncontrollable, high-intensity infernos that sterilise the soil and wipe out millennia of evolutionary history in a single afternoon.

The current baseline loss of water due to invasive alien plants is estimated at 38 million kilolitres of water annually.
(equivalent to the entire Upper Steenbras Dam)

While South African legislation mandates that landowners remove and manage invasive species from their property, the reality is a financial death trap. For the average landowner, the cost of clearing and long-term landscape rehabilitation is a crushing burden that simply doesn't fit the balance sheet.

Government funding for clearing is irregular, dwindling, and buried in red tape. Relying on the sporadic generosity of international donors and one-off grants also isn't a sustainable strategy;
it’s a gamble.

This "stop-gap" financial model is fundamentally broken and dangerously unsustainable.

The Funding Dead End

Right now, the survival of the Cape Floristic Region is hanging by a thread – and that thread is fraying.

You cannot fight a permanent biological invasion with temporary, unpredictable pockets of cash.

Unless we pivot from begging for crumbs to establishing a resilient, self-sustaining financial model,
we are just subsidising a slow-motion collapse.

A cause to believe in

We are developing a financially self-sustaining model to remove invasive alien plants and support landscape rehabilitation by using the cleared biomass as feedstock to produce engineered biochar. This could transform invasive alien clearing and landscape rehabilitation from a net loss exercise to a revenue-generating enterprise.
Established in partnership with Earth Science Africa to produce engineered biochar (EngBC) from invasive alien plants in the Cape Floristic Region.

Impact in every particle.

Improving agricultural production, healthy soils, and water quality – while curbing catastrophic water loss and out-of-control wildfires.
